When Looking Glass released “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)” in the summer of 1972 it quickly rose to the top of the charts, selling over a million copies and becoming one of the most played radio records of the year. Over time the song has endured, consistently selling over 100,000 downloads a year, being recorded by such disparate artists as Kenny Chesney and Red Hot Chili Peppers and appearing in films like Charlie’s Angels and TV series like The Simpsons. On last year’s Memorial Day countdown, on New York oldies powerhouse CBS FM, Looking Glass’s original version ranked as the eleventh most popular recording of all time!”

Looking Glass reached the charts one more time, with “Jimmy Loves Maryanne” in 1973. Reaching #33, the recording has become something of a cause celebre among some 70s music fans. Featuring lead singer/songwriter Elliot Lurie’s distinctive vocals and produced by the legendary Arif Mardin, some feel it’s a more distinguished recording than “Brandy.” The song was later covered by New Wave icon Josie Cotton.

The group disbanded in 1974 and Lurie segued into a career as a music supervisor for film and television. Performing went on the back burner. But, in 2005, he joined with three talented Detroit area musicians; Jeff Lehman, Craig Williams and Eric Mackey; and began performing once again. The reconstituted Looking Glass features Lurie on lead vocals performing Brandy, Jimmy and other of his compositions from the groups 70s albums. His voice hasn’t changed a bit and, with the use of horn and string samples from the original recordings, the band sounds tight and authentic.

In addition to the Looking Glass material, the band’s set includes creative covers of  60s and 70s classics (close your eyes and imagine the voice from Brandy singing King Harvest’s “(Dancin’ In The Moonlight)” as well as some surprises and newer things, including Lurie’s composition of the theme from the hit TV show Lizzie McGuire. The set is also peppered with his anecdotes and recollections about his years as a recording artist in New York in the 70s and later, as a Hollywood music supervisor and record producer.

Looking Glass is currently available for bookings, either as a smaller venue headliner or as part of oldies package shows. Fees are reasonable and negotiable based on travel and routing requirements.
